PZL MIELEC PARTNERS WITH RZESZOW UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY TO DEVELOP POLISH ENGINEERING SKILLS

Polish domestic aviation leader PZL Mielec, part of Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin Company, has extended its relationship with Rzeszow University of Technology by working in partnership with the Faculty of Engineering and Aeronautics to develop and launch a postgraduate course in composite design.  With the use of composites in aerospace increasing, this new course aligns perfectly with the future needs of Polish industry.

Tadeusz Markowski, Rector of Rzeszow University, and Janusz Zakrecki, President of PZL Mielec launched the new partnership in Rzeszow by signing an agreement that broadens a relationship between the two organisations stretching back to 2010. Seventeen employees from PZL Mielec, which manufactures BLACK HAWK battlefield support helicopters and M28 twin turbo-prop aircraft, will be among the first to participate in the new Composite Design course.

In today’s aerospace and defence industry, the use of composite materials is becoming increasingly important. Commercial and military fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, business jets and spacecraft all make substantial use of composites, both inside and out, as the market demands products that are increasingly lightweight, high-strength, and high-performing with reduced costs.

“As a member of the Lockheed Martin family, the team at PZL Mielec supports employee career growth and development at every stage. Advancing science, technology and engineering skills is a critical focus as the future of our workforce - as well as Poland’s technological advantage - depends on a constant supply of highly capable engineering talent,” said Janusz Zakrecki

“I am proud and excited about this extension to our partnership with Rzeszow University of Technology which is not only an investment in our own future growth but which will also help build the engineering talent pool in Poland.”

PZL Mielec, which combines high production quality with affordability is the largest Lockheed Martin production site outside the United States. Through its involvement in the global BLACK HAWK helicopter programme, it sustains jobs for more than 1,550 workers at PZL Mielec and thousands more in the Polish supply chain.

In addition to its partnership with Rzeszow University of Technology, PZL Mielec has relationships with Kielce University of Technology, Poznan University of Technology, AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and the Polish Air Force Academy in Deblin.

Underlining Lockheed Martin’s long-term commitment, the company is exploring the potential to bring new work to the facility, in addition to PZL’s current involvement in helicopter programmes, as part of a strategy to grow its international footprint.
